Media Subscriptions industry | Online media Streaming - in India

Now playing videos on YouTube is an old trend. We are moving towards the end of 21st century with vanishing DTH (Direct To Home) connections also.

Companies like HOTSTAR, NETFLIX, AMAZON (PRIME & FIRE TV-STICK), CHROME-CAST (and so on) combined with disrupting internet gives another level of entertainment to subscribers.

The main curiosity is about - At what level they are performing in India ? So lets start this topic in a summary mode as usual :)

NETFLIX India

  • Company started with DVD rental services in California in 1997 entered Indian market at the start of year 2016.
  • As per the KPMG India-FICCI Report (2017) specifies that only 2 lakhs to 5 lakhs paid subscribers are there in India.
  • Steep Pricing doesn't make NETFLIX more competitive in comparison to other players.
  • Subscription starting with Rs.500 & ends with Rs.800 per month is not effective as HOTSTAR gives, which start with only Rs.199 per month.
  • This year in August, Netflix Inc. acquires Millarworld, a entertainment co. founded by Mark & Lucy Millar - commonly known as Mark Millar.
    • Mark Millar is the legendary creator of such iconic characters specifically Kingsman & One man LOGAN.
    • Also it gives neck to neck competition to Marvel Cinematic Universe.
    • By this, Netflix can grow its business massively & will provide more originals stories to subscribers (mainly in India).
AMAZON
     ↠ Prime Video
  • Amazon started its on-demand video services in Dec, 2016 in India & some other countries.
  • In 2015, Jeff Bezos described three things in its Amazon's Annual General Meeting (AGM) that "customers love businesses & for amazon they are - marketplace, Amazon web services & Prime".
  • Prime membership of Amazon is a combo of multiple services - like streaming videos, music, e-books, free shipping & other related deals.
  • Competitive pricing of Amazon helps itself to grow extravagantly.
  • Now Amazon has decided to increase the membership subscription from Rs.499 to Rs.999.
  • In terms of subscribers base, Amazon video has around 10 million subscribers (double than NETFLIX) as per Annie, industry tracker app.
  • Amazon never thinks about any delays in making customer happy. In upcoming months, they are coming with new shows & much more. While others are still busy in production.
     ↠Fire TV stick
  • "It is the powerful streaming media device that plugs into an HDTV & lets customers access thousands of movies, TV shows, apps & games" says Amazon spokesperson.
  • Price lies between Rs.3000 to Rs.3999 including voice remote.
HOTSTAR
  • It is an online video streaming platform launched in Feb, 2015 - owned by Novi Digital Entertainment Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Star India Pvt Ltd.
  • Hotstar currently offering 50,000+ hrs of TV content & movies.
  • As per the KPMG India-FICCI Report (2017) specifies that only 63 million paid subscribers are there in India which is highest among media subscription industry/
  • Rs.199 per month subscription plan makes it - "The winner" in India.
  • Hotstar was just made to show cricket matches but gradually mixing up with the weather of streaming sector, it started showing TV shows.
Snap of KPMG Report

GOOGLE's Chromecast

  • It is similar device like Amazon's Fire TV stick.
  • The main feature of this device is that it plugs into your TVs HDMI port & using smartphone or PC as a remote control, you can use it to stream video content from NETFLIX, YouTube, Hullu, Google play store & other services.

A Short Take -  Have you heard about Over-The-Top (OTT) applications ? - We have covered it ;)

  • Yes, all above latest media business models works as OTT.
  • Traditional ISPs & telcos facing it difficult to survive bcz what is the benefit of using internet for watching cable TV shows !
  • Simply OTT is any app or service which provides a product over the internet.
The Last Lines :~

Coming to the performance of above all, we can judge it by subscribers level not the premium pricing. Because in the end, majority always wins ! In the coming years, no one knows what will come or who will overtakes the enemies.
